Vaiko Calls on Centre to Halt Kalpakkam Fast Breeder Nuclear Reactor Project

A spokesperson reported that the reactor technology employed for power generation has undergone testing in various countries. However, its adoption has been limited in recent years, primarily due to significant safety concerns and high economic costs associated with its implementation.

This type of reactor technology, which may include advanced designs such as small modular reactors or certain types of nuclear fission reactors, was once considered a promising solution for sustainable energy generation. Notably, nations like the United States, France, and Japan have conducted trials to assess its viability. However, incidents involving reactor safety, such as the Fukushima disaster in 2011, have heightened public and regulatory scrutiny, leading to a reevaluation of investments in this technology. Additionally, the economic burden of developing and maintaining these reactors, compared to the declining costs of renewable energy sources, has contributed to the decline in interest and funding for this avenue of energy production.
