IMD Predicts Below-Average Monsoon Rainfall for 2026 Due to El Niño Factors

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued its long-range forecast for the forthcoming southwest monsoon season, which is expected to occur between June and September 2024. This forecast is particularly significant as the southwest monsoon plays a crucial role in Indias agricultural cycle and overall economy.

The IMDs quarterly assessment predicts Seasonal Rainfall is expected to be approximately normal, with variations depending on specific regional factors. The organization uses advanced meteorological models and historical data to generate its predictions, which not only guide farmers in their planting schedules but also inform water resource management and disaster preparedness efforts.

Typically, the southwest monsoon is responsible for providing about 75% of India’s annual rainfall, greatly influencing crop yields, water supply, and both urban and rural livelihoods. The government and various stakeholders closely monitor these forecasts to initiate necessary measures in anticipation of the impacts of the monsoon, including potential floods or drought conditions in various regions.

The IMD will continue to update its forecasts as the season approaches, utilizing updated satellite data and climate models to provide the most accurate information regarding rainfall distribution across different parts of the country.
