Giant Telescope Could Unlock Potential Discoveries of Habitable Exoplanets and Cosmic Secrets Pending Funding Approval

The development of the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) in Chile is progressing as the project team advances into the final design phase. This significant milestone is crucial as the project prepares to seek funding from the U.S. Congress. The Giant Magellan Telescope, designed to be one of the largest optical telescopes in the world, aims to enhance our understanding of the universe by providing unprecedented resolution and sensitivity. Situated at the Las Campanas Observatory in the Atacama Desert, the GMT is expected to leverage its seven large mirrors, each measuring 8.4 meters in diameter, to conduct groundbreaking astronomical research.
