Kerala Faces Potential Heatwave; Chief Minister Advocates for Self-Lockdown Measures

The Director of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that while a formal heatwave has not been officially declared, the current hot and humid conditions experienced in several regions bear similarities to heatwave phenomena. The IMD forecasts that these intense heat conditions, combined with elevated humidity levels, are expected to continue at least until April 27.

The IMD defines a heatwave as a period of excessively hot weather, which may be accompanied by high humidity. The combination of heat and humidity can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses. Meteorological data suggest that citizens in affected areas may experience discomfort, and precautions such as staying hydrated and avoiding outdoor activities during peak hours are advised.

Local governments and health authorities are being urged to monitor the situation closely and provide support to vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions. Weather patterns indicating higher than usual temperatures and humidity levels are expected to persist throughout the month, which may have implications for agricultural practices and energy demand in the region.
