UAE-Iran Discrepancies and Indias Strategy on Israel-Palestine Language Hinder Joint Statement at BRICS Meeting

Deputy Foreign Ministers from BRICS member countries convened in New Delhi for a meeting that underscored significant divisions among the member states. The discussions were marked by differing perspectives on key issues, which resulted in the inability to draft a cohesive joint statement, a typical outcome for such gatherings.

In light of this impasse, the Indian delegation chose to issue a “Chair’s Statement” that summarized the topics of discussion without reaching a formal consensus among all participants. This approach reflects Indias position as the current President of BRICS and its role in navigating the complex dynamics within the group, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

The meeting touched on various topics essential to BRICS cooperation, including economic recovery post-pandemic, sustainable development, and geopolitical challenges. However, the polarized atmosphere raised concerns about the future effectiveness of BRICS under India’s leadership and its ability to present a united front on global issues.

India’s presidency is particularly crucial this year as BRICS seeks to enhance its global influence and attract new members. The challenges faced during this meeting could hinder these objectives and highlight the need for continued diplomatic engagement among member states to address their differing viewpoints.
