“Centre Advises States to Adjust Work Hours and Ensure Access to Drinking Water for Workers During Heat Wave”
The Ministry of Labour and Employment has issued a directive urging all states and Union Territories (UTs) to implement immediate preventive and mitigation strategies to protect workers and laborers from the increasing risks associated with rising temperatures and heatwave conditions occurring nationwide.
This call to action comes in light of recent weather data indicating elevated temperatures in several regions, which can pose significant health risks to outdoor workers, including heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and dehydration. The Ministry emphasized the importance of ensuring that workplaces are equipped with adequate hydration facilities, regular breaks, and shade provisions to shield workers from extreme heat.
Additionally, the Ministry encouraged state authorities to conduct awareness initiatives highlighting the signs of heat-related illnesses and the importance of safety measures during heatwaves. This proactive stance aligns with ongoing national efforts to address climate changes impact on public health and labor safety, recognizing the vulnerability of workers in sectors such as agriculture, construction, and manufacturing during extreme weather events.
