Congress Criticizes Amit Shah for Lack of Response to Ladakhi Peoples Statehood and Sixth Schedule Demands

Jairam Ramesh, a prominent political figure, took to social media platform X to comment on the Prime Ministers visit to Ladakh, where he is currently observing the Piprahwa relics. Ramesh highlighted a perceived disconnect between the governments focus on cultural heritage and the pressing demands from the local population. These demands include the granting of Statehood to Ladakh, implementation of the Sixth Schedule status, and stronger protections for land and employment opportunities for residents.

Ladakh, which was granted Union Territory status in 2019 after the revocation of Article 370, has seen increased calls for greater autonomy and protection of its indigenous rights. The Sixth Schedule provides for the administration of tribal areas in India, allowing for more localized governance. Advocacy for these changes reflects ongoing local concerns about economic development and cultural preservation.
