India Needs to Develop Battery Cell Manufacturing Capacity to Decrease Dependence on China, According to Industry Expert

Yogesh Mudras, the Managing Director of Informa Markets in India, has emphasized the urgent need for India to enhance its battery cell manufacturing capabilities. This call to action comes in light of the countrys growing reliance on China for battery components, which are essential for electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy storage solutions.

During a recent industry event, Mudras pointed out that as the global demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, India must take proactive steps to establish a robust domestic battery manufacturing ecosystem. He highlighted that the current dependence on Chinese imports poses significant risks to Indias energy security and technological advancement. By developing local manufacturing capabilities, India can not only reduce its reliance on foreign suppliers but also create jobs and stimulate economic growth.

Mudras noted that the Indian government has already taken steps to promote domestic manufacturing through initiatives such as the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which aims to attract investments in the battery manufacturing sector. However, he stressed that more needs to be done to build a comprehensive supply chain that includes raw material sourcing, production, and recycling of batteries.

He also pointed out the importance of collaboration between the government, industry players, and research institutions to foster innovation and ensure that India remains competitive in the global battery market. By investing in research and development, India can develop advanced battery technologies that meet the needs of its growing EV market.

In conclusion, Mudras urged stakeholders to prioritize the establishment of a self-sufficient battery manufacturing industry in India. This strategic move would not only mitigate the risks associated with dependence on Chinese imports but also position India as a key player in the global transition towards sustainable energy solutions.
