International Peacekeepers Day: India Reaffirms Commitment to UN Peacekeeping Efforts
The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers is observed annually on May 29. This day honors the courageous contributions of personnel serving in UN peacekeeping missions around the world. India stands out as one of the largest contributors of troops to these missions, having deployed nearly 300,000 personnel to over 50 different UN peacekeeping operations since the inception of the initiatives in 1948.
India’s involvement in peacekeeping reflects its commitment to global peace and security. The country has participated in significant missions in conflict zones, ranging from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to South Sudan, often helping to stabilize regions impacted by war and humanitarian crises. Among its contributions, India has also been noted for providing not only military personnel but also medical support and engineering units, enhancing the effectiveness of peacekeeping efforts.
On this special day, the United Nations pays tribute to the memory of the brave peacekeepers who lost their lives in the line of duty and acknowledges the vital role played by all personnel in fostering peace and stability across the globe.
