Exploring Indias Potential as a Major Player in Mango Exports: Opportunities and Challenges Ahead
India, renowned as the worlds largest producer of mangoes, exports only a marginal percentage of its annual output. While initiatives such as “mango diplomacy”—which aims to strengthen diplomatic ties through the promotion of the fruit—and the rising demand for processed mango products present opportunities for growth, significant challenges must be addressed.
To enhance its export capacity, India faces hurdles related to cold chain management, which ensures the fruit remains fresh during transport; the availability of treatment facilities, which are necessary for meeting international quality standards; and effective traceability systems that track the journey of mangoes from farms to foreign markets.
Additionally, exporters have highlighted logistical gaps and insufficient infrastructure as critical issues that hinder the expansion of mango exports. Investment in these areas is essential for India to improve its competitiveness in the global market and could potentially lead to an increase in mango exports, thereby benefiting farmers and boosting the economy. Currently, the government and various stakeholders are exploring methods to address these logistical challenges as part of a broader strategy to promote Indian mangoes on the international stage.
