Parliament Special Session: Introduction of Womens Reservation and Delimitation Bill in Lok Sabha Scheduled for Today

The government has announced a special three-day session set to begin on April 16, 2024, with the primary agenda of amending the Constitution to facilitate the implementation of the womens reservation law. This legislation aims to ensure a percentage of seats are reserved for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.

The proposed amendments are designed to take effect in time for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, following a delimitation exercise, which is a process of redrawing the boundaries of electoral constituencies. Delimitation is typically conducted to reflect changes in population and demographics, thereby ensuring fair representation.

This special session underscores the governments commitment to enhancing womens representation in politics, addressing long-standing calls from various advocacy groups. The womens reservation bill was first introduced in 2008 but has faced multiple delays in implementation. The upcoming session aims to expedite its legislative pathway, paving the way for increased participation of women in the political arena.
