BRICS Endorses Indore Declaration; India to spearhead initiatives on seed rights and digital agriculture

The BRICS nations have officially adopted the “Indore Declaration,” which emphasizes increased collaboration in the agricultural sector. This declaration includes the establishment of a global forum to address farmers seed rights and the introduction of a digital agriculture network. These initiatives, introduced during Indias presidency of BRICS, are designed to enhance food security, bolster the livelihoods of smallholder farmers, and promote sustainable agricultural practices within the member countries.

The commitment to sustainable agriculture reflects ongoing concerns about food security, particularly in light of climate change and its impact on farming. The establishment of the global forum on seed rights aims to safeguard the interests of farmers regarding the use and protection of indigenous and improved seed varieties. Meanwhile, the digital agriculture network is expected to leverage technology to improve access to resources, information, and markets for farmers across BRICS nations, which comprise Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

By focusing on these key areas, BRICS aims to create a more equitable and productive agricultural environment that benefits not only the member countries but also contributes to global food security efforts.
