Niti Aayogs Strategy for Developing Indias Bioeconomy to Reach $691 Billion
NITI Aayog, the policy think tank of the Government of India, has unveiled six national initiatives aimed at advancing the country’s biotechnology sector. The proposed roadmap targets the establishment of a $691 billion bioeconomy by the year 2035.
These initiatives are designed to enhance capabilities across key areas, notably in healthcare and agriculture, while also placing a substantial emphasis on industrial biotechnology and disease surveillance. In support of these objectives, the plan outlines the creation of a dedicated growth fund amounting to Rs 50,000 crore (approximately $6 billion), which will be pivotal in driving research, innovation, and commercial applications within the biotechnology domain.
The biotechnology sector in India is poised for significant expansion, fueled by increasing investments and advancing technologies. Currently, it contributes approximately $70 billion to the national economy and is expected to further grow as global demand for biotechnology solutions rises, particularly in medical research and agricultural innovation.
NITI Aayogs comprehensive approach is intended to not only stimulate economic growth but also to foster collaboration between government entities, private sector stakeholders, and academic institutions. By leveraging the strengths of Indias diverse biopharmaceutical landscape, the government aims to position India as a leader in the global biotech arena.
