Cough Syrup Sales Restricted to Prescription Only

In response to an amendment to the Drugs Rules, lozenges, pills, and tablets designed for cough relief will continue to be available for purchase over the counter in India. This decision comes in the wake of public health concerns highlighted by a tragic incident last year in Madhya Pradesh (M.P.), where 24 children lost their lives after consuming contaminated cough syrup.

The amendment seeks to balance the need for accessible cough medications while ensuring the safety and efficacy of these products. Health officials emphasize the importance of regulating pharmaceuticals more rigorously to prevent similar occurrences in the future, and they are working to strengthen quality control measures in the production and distribution of medicinal products.
