Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has formally reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a request to maintain the current strength of the Lok Sabha, set at 543 seats, for an extended period of 25 years. This request comes in light of discussions surrounding the process of delimitation, which involves redrawing electoral district boundaries based on population changes.

Kharges letter emphasizes the significance of this issue, describing it as one of “enormous significance.” He urged not only a freeze on the number of seats but also requested that the government share its delimitation plan ahead of any potential changes. Delimitation processes have historically been contentious, often triggering debates about fair representation and political power among different regions and communities.

In the context of this request, Kharge highlighted the importance of an all-party meeting to discuss issues of delimitation comprehensively. He cautioned against any unilateral actions by the government that might overlook the concerns of various political parties.

Delimitation in India is conducted approximately every 10 years based on the census data, with the most recent census scheduled to provide fresh data after a delay due to the pandemic. The previous delimitation occurred in 2008 and was based on the 2001 Census. Current discussions come as the 2021 Census is anticipated to influence future electoral arrangements, making Kharges appeal timely.
