India Increases Oil Imports from Russia and UAE as Refiners Prepare for Hormuz Reopening

In June, Indias crude oil imports from Russia experienced a significant increase, reinforcing Russias status as Indias leading supplier. Simultaneously, imports from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) remained robust, highlighting a strategic diversification in Indias energy procurement. This shift is largely attributed to ongoing geopolitical uncertainties in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil transit.

Despite a gradual reopening of the Strait following recent tensions, Indian refiners are opting to sustain high levels of imports from alternative suppliers. This trend underscores a possible long-term transformation in Indias approach to securing energy resources, particularly in light of fluctuating market conditions and the need for energy security.

India, the worlds third-largest oil importer, has been actively seeking to diversify its energy sources to mitigate risks associated with geopolitical instability. The reliance on Russian oil has also implications for geopolitical relations, especially in the context of international sanctions and the global energy landscape amidst changing alliances.
