Karnataka Villager Develops Pixxel and Secures NASA Contract Despite Growing Up Without Internet Access or a Smartphone
Awais Ahmed, who grew up in the remote Aldur village of Karnataka without access to the internet or smartphones, developed a deep interest in space through the use of encyclopaedias. This passion led him to co-found Pixxel in 2019 alongside his batchmate Kshitij Khandelwal from BITS Pilani. The startup addresses a significant gap in the market for high-resolution hyperspectral satellite imagery, which is essential for various applications.
Pixxels satellites are now capable of monitoring crop health, detecting methane emissions, and tracking pollution from space, offering valuable insights for agriculture and environmental management. The company has gained significant traction in the space industry, receiving recognition from prominent organizations, including TIME, NASA, and the World Economic Forum. Supported by a range of global investors, Pixxel has emerged as a leading private space firm, contributing to advancements in satellite technology and sustainable practices. Their innovative approach aims to provide critical data to tackle pressing global challenges, making space technology accessible for a variety of sectors.
