Government Proposes ₹5,000 Crore Initiative to Support Green Technology Adoption in Steel Industry
The Indian government is poised to introduce a ₹5,000 crore initiative within the next three months aimed at promoting cleaner technologies within the steel sector, which is one of the largest contributors to carbon emissions in the country. This initiative, known as the National Strategy for Sustainable Secondary Steel, is designed to mitigate the environmental impact of the steel industry while supporting Indias pledge to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.
The program will extend benefits to all steel manufacturers, but it is anticipated that secondary producers—those who recycle scrap metal to create new steel—will receive substantial financial assistance. This support is intended to facilitate the adoption of sustainable production practices and enhance the overall efficiency of operations within the sector.
The initiative aligns with global sustainability trends and Indias commitment to reducing carbon emissions as part of international climate agreements. By fostering the development and implementation of cleaner technologies, the government aims to not only address environmental concerns but also improve the competitiveness of the steel industry in the global market. This move is expected to contribute significantly to India’s broader environmental goals and support the transition towards a more sustainable economy.
