Kerala Health Minister Initiates Investigation into Procurement of Unused Medical Equipment

The State Health Minister announced that an investigation will be launched to examine transactions involving funds allocated under the Plan scheme and the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). The inquiry will specifically focus on the procurement of medical supplies and equipment provided by the central government during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The investigation aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the utilization of these funds, which are critical for bolstering healthcare infrastructure in the state. The Plan and PMSSY funds are designed to improve healthcare services, and proper oversight is essential to prevent mismanagement.

During the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, various states faced acute shortages of medical supplies, which led to emergency procurements. By assessing these purchases, the inquiry seeks to establish whether funds were utilized appropriately and whether the necessary equipment met health standards. It also aims to enhance future procurement processes and strengthen the healthcare response to any similar public health emergencies.
