Eastern India Leads in Geographical Indications Registrations; Madhya Pradesh Achieves Highest Registrations for 2025-26
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) Chair at the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS) and JHARCRAFT, the Jharkhand governments initiative for promoting traditional crafts, have achieved significant milestones by securing the highest number of Geographical Indications (GI) registrations for their respective states, West Bengal and Jharkhand.
Geographical Indications are a form of intellectual property that identify goods as originating from a specific place, where a particular quality, reputation, or other characteristic of the goods is essentially attributable to that geographical origin. These registrations play a crucial role in promoting local industries and protecting the rights of local artisans and producers.
West Bengal and Jharkhand have a rich cultural heritage, with various traditional products that are unique to these regions. The recognition through GI tags can enhance marketability and provide legal protection against counterfeiting, thereby supporting the livelihoods of local communities.
Further information on the specific products that received GI registration and the benefits this will bring to local industries can provide valuable insights into the impact of these achievements. Additionally, the collaboration between academic institutions and local enterprises in promoting traditional crafts underscores the importance of community engagement in preserving cultural identity while fostering economic development.
