SC requests Centre to submit new aviation rules aimed at regulating fluctuating airfares.

The Supreme Court of India has directed the Central Government to submit the new rules regulating airfares within two weeks, responding to concerns over “unpredictable fluctuations” in airfare pricing. During a recent hearing, the Court emphasized the need for regulatory measures to provide consumers with fair and consistent pricing amid what has been described as “volatile airfares.”

The Courts call for action comes in light of the Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam, under which the government is tasked with formulating regulations that ensure consumer protection and transparency in airfare pricing. The Supreme Court expressed its dissatisfaction with the delay in implementing these rules, urging the government to prioritize this matter.

Air travel has seen significant price volatility recently, attributed to factors such as fuel price fluctuations, seasonal demand surges, and economic conditions affecting both air carriers and consumers. The importance of effective regulation has become increasingly evident, especially as air travel has grown in popularity post-pandemic.

In its previous hearings, the Court has focused on consumer rights and the necessity of clarifying the regulations surrounding airfare changes.
