Consumer panel imposes fine on SpiceJet for using deceptive practices on booking platform
The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on SpiceJet for using “dark patterns” in its booking platform. These practices involve deceptive user interface design techniques that lead consumers to inadvertently consent to its loyalty program.
CCPA has found that SpiceJet employed misleading tactics to gain consumer consent, which has drawn criticism from various industry stakeholders. The airlines actions were deemed to compromise consumer rights and breach regulations concerning fair trade practices. Such patterns may include making opt-out options less visible or complicating the process for consumers to refuse participation in loyalty programs.
SpiceJets fine is part of a broader effort by consumer protection authorities to ensure transparency and safeguard consumers from unfair trade practices. The decision follows recent scrutiny of digital platforms and their approach to user consent, especially in the wake of increased digital transactions.
The imposition of this fine serves as a reminder to other companies in the sector to comply with consumer protection laws and prioritize clear communication with customers regarding their rights and the products offered.
