Banks Benefit from FCNR-B Surge: ICICI, SBI, HDFC Report Significant Gains

Growth in FCNR(B) Deposits Benefits Major Indian Banks

Recent data indicates a significant increase in Foreign Currency Non-Resident (Bank) deposits, also known as FCNR(B) deposits, benefiting several key Indian banks. Notably, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India (SBI), and HDFC Bank have reported strong inflows attributed to this uptick.

According to industry analysts, the surge in FCNR(B) deposits is largely influenced by competitive interest rates and the influx of foreign investment. ICICI Bank has emerged as a frontrunner, reporting substantial hauls from this segment, followed closely by SBI and HDFC Bank, which have also seen impressive deposit growth.

A report by the Economic Times highlights that foreign lenders are capitalizing on this growth, with a notable 80% of FCNR(B) inflows reportedly coming via leverage routes. This influx contributes to enhanced liquidity in the banking sector, potentially lowering overall funding costs by up to 50 basis points.

The total foreign exchange reserves have reached a record high of $740.8 billion, according to the latest figures. This increase in reserves has positively impacted the Indian rupee, providing additional stability against international currency fluctuations. As banks adapt to the changing economic landscape, continued monitoring of deposit trends and liquidity management will be essential for maintaining growth and profitability.
