Several companies, including Adani Enterprises and NTPC, apply for the Centre’s Rs 37,500-crore coal gasification scheme.

The Indian government has received a total of seven applications for its Rs 37,500 crore (approximately $4.5 billion) coal gasification scheme. This initiative aims to promote the conversion of coal into cleaner and more efficient energy sources, thereby reducing reliance on traditional coal power and addressing environmental concerns.

Among the notable applicants are major corporations such as Adani Enterprises and NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation). The scheme is a crucial part of the government’s efforts to transition to a more sustainable energy model, leveraging the abundant coal reserves in the country while attempting to mitigate the associated ecological impacts.

The coal gasification process involves converting coal into syngas, which can then be used to produce electricity, chemicals, or fuels. It promises to lower carbon emissions compared to conventional coal combustion methods. The government views this scheme as vital for energy security and as a means to achieve its climate goals.

The Ministry of Coal has expressed optimism about this initiative, highlighting its potential to create jobs and stimulate economic growth. The evaluation of the bids is currently underway to select the candidates that will move forward with the project.
