Panel establishes phased timelines for the exit of old vehicles in Delhi NCR.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has established a phased timeline for the scrapping of older vehicles in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). This initiative aims to combat air pollution and improve air quality in the area, which is known for its deteriorating environmental conditions.

According to the CAQM, the plan is to gradually phase out vehicles that are over 15 years old. The implementation will take place in several stages to ensure a smooth transition. Initially, older vehicles will be restricted from operating in designated areas, followed by a complete ban on their use. This decision is part of a broader strategy to reduce emissions, enhance public health, and create a cleaner environment for residents.

The CAQM has highlighted the need for stricter measures to combat air pollution, which has been a persistent issue in Delhi-NCR, especially during winter months. The presence of older automobiles, which often fail to meet modern emissions standards, contributes significantly to the air quality crisis.

Additionally, the panel has stated that it will collaborate with local authorities and stakeholders to facilitate the scrapping process and ensure that replacement vehicles meet necessary standards. This plan also aims to encourage the adoption of electric and fuel-efficient vehicles among the population.

Public awareness campaigns are expected to be launched, informing vehicle owners about the scrapping process and available alternatives. The ultimate goal is to foster a cleaner and healthier urban environment for all residents of Delhi and its neighboring regions.
