India has maintained a ban on the import of genetically modified products and will not open its dairy sector to such imports, according to a government official.

Indias Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, has reaffirmed the countrys longstanding position against the import of genetically modified (GM) products. During a recent event, Goyal emphasized that India has never permitted the importation of GM products and has no intention of changing this policy in the future. He stated, “India has never allowed the import of genetically modified products, and we will never open our dairy sector to such imports.”

Goyals remarks come amid ongoing discussions about agricultural policies and food security in India. The minister highlighted the importance of maintaining the integrity of Indias agricultural sector, which he believes is vital for the countrys economy and the health of its citizens. He reiterated that the government is committed to protecting local farmers and ensuring that the food supply remains safe and natural.

The dairy sector, in particular, has been a focal point of concern for many stakeholders, including farmers and consumer advocacy groups. Goyals declaration serves to reassure these groups that the government prioritizes domestic agricultural practices over foreign GM products. This stance aligns with the broader sentiment among many Indian consumers who prefer traditional farming methods and are wary of the potential risks associated with GM foods.

In addition to addressing GM products, Goyal also discussed the governments efforts to enhance the agricultural sector through various initiatives aimed at improving productivity and sustainability. He mentioned that the government is focused on supporting farmers with better technology, access to markets, and financial assistance to ensure their livelihoods are secure.

The ministers comments reflect a commitment to preserving Indias agricultural heritage while navigating the complexities of modern agricultural practices. As the global conversation around genetically modified organisms continues to evolve, India remains steadfast in its approach, prioritizing the health of its citizens and the welfare of its farmers.
