India to Manufacture Tunnel Boring Machines Domestically if China Restricts Exports, Says Official

India is preparing to manufacture tunnel boring machines domestically in response to potential restrictions on exports from China, according to Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry. This strategic move is aimed at ensuring that India can maintain its infrastructure development projects without relying heavily on foreign imports, particularly from China, which has been a significant supplier of such machinery.

During a recent event, Goyal emphasized the importance of self-reliance in the manufacturing sector, highlighting the governments commitment to boosting domestic production capabilities. He stated that if China decides to limit its exports of tunnel boring machines, India will be ready to produce these essential machines within its own borders. This initiative aligns with the broader “Make in India” campaign, which seeks to enhance local manufacturing and reduce dependency on foreign goods.

The ministers remarks come amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions that have raised concerns about the reliability of international trade. By investing in local manufacturing, India aims to secure its infrastructure projects, which are crucial for economic growth and development. The production of tunnel boring machines is particularly significant for large-scale construction projects, including metro systems, highways, and underground facilities.

Goyal also noted that the government is actively working to create a conducive environment for manufacturers by providing incentives and support for research and development. This includes fostering partnerships between public and private sectors to enhance technological advancements in the manufacturing of heavy machinery.

As India continues to navigate the complexities of global trade, the focus on domestic production is expected to play a vital role in strengthening the country’s infrastructure capabilities and ensuring long-term economic resilience. The move to manufacture tunnel boring machines domestically is just one of many steps the Indian government is taking to bolster its manufacturing sector and achieve greater self-sufficiency in critical industries.
