Minister Directs Transfer of Dasara Jumbo Gajendra to Nagarahole Camp
In response to public concerns and a social media campaign advocating for animal welfare, Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre has ordered the relocation of a 63-year-old elephant from an elephant camp in Chamarajanagar to the Mattigodu camp located within the Nagarahole National Park.
The decision highlights the ongoing discussions surrounding the treatment and conditions of captive elephants in Karnataka, where advocates have raised awareness about the need for better living conditions for these animals. The Mattigodu camp is known for its efforts in preserving elephants, providing them with a more natural habitat, and offering better care.
This move also aligns with broader efforts by the state government to enhance wildlife conservation and promote ethical practices regarding the management of animals in captivity. The relocation is expected to take place in the coming weeks, with officials monitoring the transition to ensure the well-being of the elephant throughout the process.
