In a recent update regarding the ongoing transformation of Air India, Tata Sons Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran has indicated that significant progress has been made over the initial 5-10 year period of revitalization. This announcement reflects the airlines ambition to rebound following a series of operational and financial challenges that have plagued it for years.

Chandrasekaran emphasized that the recovery and rebuilding of an airline is not a short-term endeavor, stating, “Every great airline was built over decades, not quarters.” This acknowledgment aligns with industry standards where substantial advancements in airlines typically span multiple years and involve comprehensive strategic shifts.

As part of this transformation, Air India has been grappling with mounting financial losses, which reached ₹22,238 crores (approximately $3 billion) in the fiscal year 2026. In his remarks, Chandrasekaran underscored the importance of a long-term vision for the airline and hinted at the strategic steps being taken, such as fleet modernization and enhancing customer service standards.
