Bengal Electors Await Adjudication, Faced with Uncertainty Over Tribunal Redressal
The state of West Bengal is expected to have a reduced number of eligible voters for the 2026 Assembly elections compared to previous electoral events. In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the electorate was recorded at approximately 7.60 crore, while around 7.34 crore voters participated in the 2021 Assembly elections. Currently, the electoral roll in West Bengal consists of about 7.04 crore voters. However, about 60 lakh entries are currently under review, with nearly 40% of these facing rejection.
This potential decrease in voter numbers is attributed to ongoing assessments of the electoral roll, which aims to ensure accuracy and compliance with registration requirements. The state election commission continues its efforts to address discrepancies and update the voter list ahead of the important electoral cycle. Additional updates on the status of the electoral roll are expected as the election date approaches, with officials emphasizing the importance of ensuring that every eligible citizen has the opportunity to participate in the democratic process.
