Bengal Fox Population in Tamil Nadu Faces Habitat Challenges
Bengal foxes, recognized for their monogamous behavior, have been identified in limited regions across Tamil Nadu. According to officials from the Forest Department, this species is primarily found in several isolated pockets within the districts of Dharmapuri, Tiruvannamalai, Salem, Madurai, and Villupuram.
The Bengal fox (Vulpes bengalensis) is a small canid species native to the Indian subcontinent, known for its distinctive large ears and long tail. Due to habitat loss and fragmentation, their populations have become increasingly confined, raising concerns about their conservation status. Efforts to monitor and protect their habitats are critical for ensuring the survival of this species. Conservation initiatives in Tamil Nadu may include habitat restoration and the establishment of protected areas to support the remaining populations of Bengal foxes.
