BJP Supports NCERTs Decision to Include Emergency Chapter in Class 9 Curriculum

A newly developed social science textbook has categorized the Emergency period in India as “one of the major challenges” to the countrys democracy. This period, which lasted from 1975 to 1977, saw the suspension of a significant number of fundamental rights, leading to widespread political unrest and dissent.

During the Emergency, then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency, which allowed the government to rule by decree, curtailing civil liberties and restricting the press. This era is often cited as a critical turning point in Indias democratic journey, prompting debates about governance, civil rights, and political accountability. The textbooks characterization aims to educate students on the implications of such government actions and the importance of safeguarding democratic values.

Furthermore, the discussion surrounding the Emergency period emphasizes its long-term effects on Indian politics, including the eventual restoration of democracy and subsequent electoral reforms. The textbook seeks to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Indias democratic landscape and the lessons drawn from this contentious chapter in history.
