BRS Criticizes Proposal to Connect Godavari and Cauvery without Involving Telangana
Former Minister Harish Rao has criticized Chief Minister Revanth Reddys alleged proposal to exchange Telanganas approval for the Godavari-Cauvery linking project in return for Andhra Pradeshs endorsement of the Pranahita–Chevella Lift Irrigation Scheme (PRLIS). Rao expressed concerns that such a deal would jeopardize the interests and rights of the state in the Godavari River basin. He argued that this approach could have long-term repercussions for Telangana, potentially compromising its water resources and agricultural sustainability.
This issue has garnered attention as the Godavari River is a vital water source for Telangana, supporting numerous irrigation projects and livelihoods in the region. The linking of rivers, a subject of ongoing debate in India, involves complex negotiations between states over water sharing and access rights. Critics of the proposed barter argue that it could undermine the autonomy of Telangana in managing its water resources, particularly in light of the ongoing discussions surrounding inter-state river management and the equitable distribution of water resources.
Rao’s remarks come amidst rising tensions between state governments over water sharing agreements, a matter that has significant implications for agriculture, urban water supply, and environmental sustainability across the region. As the situation develops, further discussions and negotiations are expected in order to address the rights and claims of both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh concerning their respective water resources.
