Call for Return of Lower Ethanol Blend in E20 Petrol, According to Chief Economic Adviser Nageswaran
A recent opinion piece has addressed the ongoing debate surrounding the use of E20 fuel, which contains a 20% ethanol blend, in vehicles. The article stated that current available evidence does not support claims that E20 is harmful to engine performance in newer vehicles. However, it highlighted potential issues for older vehicles, particularly those manufactured before the widespread adoption of ethanol-blended fuels.
In India, there are approximately 75 to 80 million older two-wheelers on the road. The article noted that vehicles of this age often contain rubber seals that are not compatible with ethanol-based fuels, which could lead to issues such as leaks or engine damage over time. Retrofitting these older vehicles with appropriate seals is a solution, but experts believe that implementing such changes on a large scale will require significant time and resources.
Ethanol fuels are considered more environmentally friendly as they reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional gasoline. However, the transition to higher blends of ethanol raises concerns regarding compatibility with older vehicle models, reinforcing the need for continued research and dialogue as the automotive industry evolves towards more sustainable fuel options.
