Census Rehearsal Allows for Caste Data Collection
The final methodology for enumerating caste in the upcoming Census 2027 will be developed according to feedback collected from a recent test exercise. This approach follows the challenges encountered during the 2011 Census, where the open-column methodology led to the identification of over 4.6 million unique caste names.
The Indian government is taking a more structured approach this time, aiming for clarity and consistency in caste classification. This feedback mechanism is intended to address the complexities that arose in the previous survey, ensuring that the enumeration process is both effective and reflective of the diverse population.
As the preparation for the Census 2027 moves forward, stakeholders from various communities and experts are expected to contribute to the discussions on how best to implement these methodologies, ultimately influencing policy decisions and resource allocation based on caste demographics. The integration of caste data into the Census is significant for social and economic planning in India, as it provides insights into the needs and representation of different communities.
