Centre Assures Southern States Will Not Face Losses from Delimitation, to Provide Clarification in Parliament

Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently discussed a potential increase in the number of Lok Sabha seats with representatives from his party. During meetings held over the past few weeks, Shah indicated that he envisions a 50% increase in Lok Sabha seats, with the additional seats allotted to states in proportion to their current representation.

This proposed change aims to address the growing population and demographic shifts in various states, ensuring that parliamentary representation accurately reflects the current population distribution across the country. The increase could potentially result in a significant reconfiguration of seat allocations, impacting the political landscape ahead of future elections.

While the proposal has yet to be formally announced or implemented, it aligns with ongoing discussions regarding electoral reforms in India, focusing on maintaining a fair and equitable representation in the Lok Sabha, which currently consists of 543 members. Additionally, any changes to the seat distribution would require legislative approval and could spark debates regarding regional representation and political strategy within the ruling party and opposition parties.
