Centre Develops Urea Policy Focused on Coal Gasification to Reduce Gas Import Reliance

India is in the process of finalizing a comprehensive policy designed to enhance urea production through coal gasification technology. The primary objective of this initiative is to reduce the countrys dependence on imported natural gas, thereby promoting greater self-sufficiency in fertilizer production.

This policy is anticipated to be officially announced within the next month and will take advantage of Indias abundant domestic coal reserves, which can serve as a viable feedstock for urea manufacture. By shifting towards coal-based production, the government aims to safeguard essential agricultural inputs while also aiming to conserve foreign exchange expenditures associated with gas imports.
