CERN Investigates Dark Matter Following Higgs Boson Discovery
The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is turning its attention to one of the universes greatest mysteries: dark matter. The announcement follows CERNs groundbreaking discovery of the Higgs boson, often referred to as the “God particle,” which confirmed the Standard Model of particle physics. With this foundational understanding in place, researchers at CERN believe the next significant challenge is to unveil the nature of dark matter, which is thought to constitute approximately 27% of the universe, yet remains undetectable through conventional means.
Recent upgrades to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the worlds largest and most powerful particle accelerator, aim to enhance its capabilities and boost the chances of detecting dark matter. This project, known as the High-Luminosity LHC (HiLumi), will increase the collision rate of proton beams and improve the precision of measurements, potentially contributing valuable insights into the elusive nature of dark matter.
CERNs Director-General, Fabiola Gianotti, has emphasized the importance of expanding large-scale scientific endeavors. She advocates for the development of more mega-science projects to address the complex questions currently facing the field of physics, including dark matter and beyond.
As advancements continue at CERN, the scientific community watches closely, hopeful that new findings will shed light on the composition of the universe and significantly expand human understanding of fundamental physics.
