Chennai Reports Record Power Demand Exceeding 5,000 MW

On June 10, power demand reached a new peak, despite ongoing complaints from residents about frequent power outages. The maximum recorded demand prior to this was 4,966 megawatts (MW).

This increase in demand may be attributed to several factors, including higher temperatures leading to increased use of air conditioning, as well as potential industrial activities contributing to the load on the electrical system. Local utility companies are being urged to improve infrastructure and address the reliability of power supply to meet the rising demand and mitigate the impact of outages on residents. In response, officials are assessing the current power distribution and supply strategies to enhance service delivery and ensure meeting future demands effectively.
