CM Shivakumar Requests Centres Intervention on Mekedatu, Invites Tamil Nadu to Inspect Site
Karnataka Chief Minister Seeks Central Intervention on Mekedatu Project
Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has urged the central government to intervene in the ongoing discussions regarding the Mekedatu water project, which aims to construct a dam across the Cauvery River. This project has been a contentious issue between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, with Tamil Nadu opposing the development, citing concerns over water distribution and environmental impact.
In a recent statement, CM Shivakumar encouraged the Tamil Nadu government to conduct an inspection of the proposed project site. He emphasized the importance of dialogue and transparency, suggesting that a site visit by Tamil Nadu officials could help clarify the project’s intentions and address concerns.
The Mekedatu project is designed to provide drinking water to Bengaluru and surrounding areas, as well as generate hydroelectric power. It has faced various legal and political challenges, with Tamil Nadu securing a stay from the Supreme Court against its implementation. The Karnataka government argues that the project is vital for meeting the growing water needs of its population.
Further discussions and negotiations between the two states, facilitated by the central government, may be necessary in order to reach a consensus that addresses the interests of both parties involved.
