“Congress Expresses Concerns Over Regional Disparities Amid Governments Delimitation Plans for Womens Reservation”

Congress leaders have raised concerns regarding a proposal to increase the strength of the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies uniformly by 50%. They argue that such a change could disproportionately benefit states with larger populations, potentially widening the existing representation gap among various regions.

Currently, the allocation of seats in the Lok Sabha (the lower house of Indias Parliament) and State Assemblies is determined by the population ratios as calculated during the last census. With Indias population growth, states like Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra already have a significant number of representatives compared to smaller states like Sikkim or Goa.

If the total number of seats were to be increased by 50% across the board, it could result in substantial gains in the number of seats for these populous states, further enhancing their political influence. Critics argue that this would undermine the principle of equitable representation, as states with smaller populations would not see a proportional increase in their representation, thereby diminishing their voice in the legislative process.

The leaders are urging for a more balanced approach to representation that considers both population growth and the need for equal representation among states of varying sizes. They emphasize the importance of reforming the political representation system to ensure that all states can fairly participate in the democratic process, particularly in light of the upcoming 2024 general elections.
