Congress MP Dean Kuriakose Criticizes Removal of Kerala Representative from Mullaperiyar Panel
Congress MP Dean Kuriakose has expressed strong criticism regarding the National Dam Safety Authoritys (NDSA) decision to remove Keralas representative from the safety panel overseeing the Mullaperiyar Dam. Kuriakose argued that the exclusion of state representation compromises the safety protocols and decision-making processes crucial for the dams upkeep and the welfare of the communities in its vicinity.
The Mullaperiyar Dam, located in the Western Ghats of Kerala, has long been a topic of concern, particularly due to its age and the seismic activity in the region. The dam, constructed in the late 19th century, is operated by Tamil Nadu but is situated in Kerala. The management of the dam has been contentious, leading to various legal and political battles over safety and operational authority.
Kuriakoses remarks highlight the importance of local governance in ensuring that safety measures reflect the needs and concerns of the affected populations. He urged the government to reconsider the NDSAs decision, stressing that regional input is vital for a comprehensive approach to dam safety.
The NDSA was established under the Dam Safety Act of 2021, aimed at fostering uniform regulations and oversight for dam safety across India. This incident raises questions about the balance between authority and local representation in the management of critical infrastructure, especially in areas prone to natural disasters.
