Conservation Activists Express Concerns Regarding Modernization Plans for Theppakadu Elephant Camp

A proposed project estimated at ₹35 crore aims to upgrade an over-century-old facility that currently houses 27 elephants. The initiative has garnered concern from conservationists, including Priya Davidar, a conservation biologist and member of the National Board for Wildlife. Davidar expressed “strong misgivings” regarding the projects location, noting that it seeks to undertake construction within the core area of a tiger reserve, which is also a vital habitat for elephants.

The tiger reserve is known for its biodiversity and serves as a critical ecosystem for both species. This proposed development raises questions about the balance between conservation efforts and infrastructural advancements. Environmental experts are likely to monitor the situation closely, as any construction in such sensitive regions can have significant implications for wildlife and habitat preservation. Further discussions may be necessary to ensure that the development aligns with conservation goals and addresses concerns from wildlife experts and local communities.
