CWMA Urges Basin States to Utilize Reservoir Water Wisely; Decision on Cauvery Releases Postponed
During the 52nd meeting of the Cauvery Water Management Authority, which took place recently, key directives were issued concerning water management and distribution in the Cauvery River basin. The meeting comes in the wake of intensified political discussions surrounding the proposed Mekedatu balancing reservoir project, a controversial initiative aimed at enhancing water storage and management in the region.
The Mekedatu project, which is designed to create a reservoir that would help in managing water supply for both drinking and irrigation purposes, has faced opposition from several stakeholders, including Karnataka and Tamil Nadu governments. Proponents argue that the project will benefit agricultural activities and urban water supply, while opponents express concerns over its environmental impact and implications for water allocation between the states.
The Cauvery Water Management Authority was established to implement the Supreme Courts directives concerning water sharing in the Cauvery basin and to ensure equitable distribution and management of water resources among the states involved. The outcomes of this meeting are expected to influence ongoing discussions and decisions regarding the Mekedatu project and its future viability.
