Delhi Cabinet Endorses New Electric Vehicle Policy with ₹15,000 Crore Allocation
Delhi Cabinet Approves Comprehensive EV Policy with ₹15,000-Crore Budget
The Delhi Cabinet has approved a new Electric Vehicle (EV) policy, allocating a budget of ₹15,000 crores. This policy aims to promote the adoption of electric vehicles in the capital, with additional benefits designed to encourage consumers and businesses to transition from conventional fuel-based vehicles.
Under the new policy framework, the city plans to subsidize electric vehicle purchases, implement zero road tax for electric vehicles, and phase out petrol two-wheelers by 2028. Electric two-wheelers will become the only permissible mode of two-wheeled transport on Delhi roads by that year. Furthermore, electric cars priced up to ₹30 lakhs will also be granted exemptions from road taxes.
As part of this initiative, the Delhi government is pushing for a transition to electric-only autorickshaws, which has been met with some criticism from unions describing the change as “abrupt.”
The announcement of this policy coincides with a broader push towards sustainable transport solutions aimed at reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in Delhi, which is known for its high pollution levels. This ambitious plan reflects the Delhi government’s commitment to meeting sustainability goals and contributing to global climate initiatives.
This policy framework is part of a larger trend across India, with many states recognizing the importance of electric mobility to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and improve urban air quality. The Delhi governments actions align with national policies to promote cleaner technologies and could serve as a model for other cities in India facing similar challenges.
