Despite Elevated Prices, Shoppers Gather in Kasimedu for Fish Purchases

Recent reports indicate a significant increase in seafood prices following the implementation of a ban on fishing activities. According to local traders, vanjaram (also known as kingfish), which was previously priced at ₹800 per kilogram, is now being sold for ₹1,200 per kilogram. Similarly, paarai (also known as pomfret) has seen a price rise from ₹530 per kilogram to ₹950 per kilogram. Furthermore, the price of nethili (anchovies) has surged from ₹370 per kilogram to ₹600 per kilogram.

This price hike is attributed to a reduction in supply due to the fishing ban, which was enacted to protect marine biodiversity and allow fish populations to replenish. Experts note that such regulations are essential for sustainable fisheries, but they can also lead to short-term financial strain for both traders and consumers. The effects on local markets and fishing communities are ongoing as authorities monitor the situation. The fishing ban is expected to be re-evaluated in the coming months to assess its impact on both the environment and the economy.
