EPFO Raises Wage Ceiling to Rs 25,000, Expanding Social Security Coverage
EPFO Wage Ceiling Increased to Rs 25,000 to Broaden Social Security Coverage
The Indian Cabinet has approved an increase in the wage ceiling for the Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 per month. This change is set to expand the social security net, benefiting approximately 51 lakh (5.1 million) workers across the country.
Previously, the EPFO wage limit pegged at Rs 15,000 restricted many low-income workers from accessing its benefits. The new ceiling will allow workers earning up to Rs 25,000 to avail themselves of provident fund benefits, which include retirement savings, insurance, and pension schemes.
This decision aligns with the governments ongoing efforts to enhance social security measures and support the financial security of workers, particularly those in the informal sector. By raising the wage ceiling, the government aims to include more workers under its social security umbrella, thus providing them with greater financial stability and protection.
The increase in the wage threshold may also lead to discussions on subsequent adjustments in the EPF insurance limit, which could potentially rise to Rs 10.50 lakh (1.05 million) following this enhancement.
This policy adjustment is seen as a crucial step toward improving workers welfare rights in India, especially in the context of increasing economic pressures and the need for comprehensive social protection.
