Oil Minister Hardeep Puri Discusses Ethanol Use in Racing and Vehicle Performance

In recent statements, India’s Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri addressed the implications of ethanol use in automotive fuel, particularly in racing cars. During a press conference, he noted that racing vehicles are increasingly employing ethanol as a component of their fuel mixtures, highlighting a trend towards alternative fuel sources in high-performance settings.

The minister also discussed the ongoing transition to E20 fuel, which consists of 20% ethanol blended with regular petrol. Puri acknowledged there may be a “minor” reduction in mileage for vehicles utilizing E20 fuel. Despite the government’s push for E20, there has been resistance from petrol car owners who express concerns over the compatibility of their vehicles with the new fuel blend. Many are apprehensive about potential negative effects, including decreased engine performance and increased wear on older vehicles.

A recent survey has indicated that, alongside the mileage drop, E20 fuel may cause accelerated wear and tear on older vehicles. The federal government is also in the process of initiating pilot tests for a more concentrated E25 fuel, which contains 25% ethanol. The outcomes of these tests are expected to be revealed by the end of 2027.
