Ethanol Supplies Exceed 800 Crore Litres: Addressing Indias Upcoming Demand Challenge

Indias ethanol production program reached a significant milestone, surpassing 800 crore liters in the latest supply year. As of July, grain-based feedstocks have taken precedence in the production landscape, contributing to 76% of the total ethanol output. Notably, maize and surplus grains procured by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) were key contributors to this increase in grain-based ethanol supply.

In contrast, the share of sugarcane-based ethanol in the monthly production mix experienced a decline. This shift highlights a changing dynamic in the sources of ethanol production, reflecting broader trends within Indias biofuel industry.

Looking ahead, stakeholders in the ethanol sector are directing their efforts towards expanding market demand to better align with the growing production capacity. The Indian government has set ambitious targets for ethanol blending in fuel to promote renewable energy, reduce dependency on fossil fuels, and enhance energy security. With these developments, the industry aims to capitalize on both domestic consumption and export opportunities as part of a broader strategy to achieve sustainability goals.
