Experts: Operating Nuclear Plants Requires a Long-Term Commitment

The Government of India has introduced the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Act of 2025, aimed at significantly increasing the nation’s nuclear power generation capacity. The Act outlines plans to enhance Indias existing nuclear power capacity from 8.7 gigawatts (GW) to 100 GW by the year 2047.

This ambitious initiative is part of Indias broader strategy to transition to clean energy sources and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. By expanding its nuclear capabilities, India seeks to contribute to global efforts against climate change while meeting the rising energy demands of its growing population and economy.

The SHANTI Act is expected to facilitate advancements in nuclear technology and infrastructure, promote research and development, and enhance collaboration with international nuclear experts and organizations. The framework may also focus on ensuring safety standards and environmental protections as India embarks on this significant energy transformation journey.

These developments come in light of Indias commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070, which aligns with international climate agreements and the global shift towards sustainable energy practices.
